Olija, One of the big surprises of the Devolver Direct broadcast this afternoon was that Olija, the latest game from Skeleton Crew Studio, was launching today…
For the time being, Olija remains unavailable, leading to quite a bit of confusion, but if the Devolver Direct announcement is to be believed, it should be coming soon.
Olija is a game about Faraday’s quest, a man shipwrecked then trapped in the mysterious country of Terraphage. Armed with a legendary harpoon, he and other castaways try to leave this hostile country to return to their homelands.
The combat looks to be incredibly interesting and unique, as the protagonist Faraday uses his harpoon to pull himself toward enemies as he fells them, creating an uninterrupted chain of kills. This also works well for bosses as players can set up combos by continuously pulling themselves to the enemy.
The announcement trailer shows off a lot of fast-paced platform combat using the movement mechanic of the harpoon. The movement and action has a satisfyingly physical look to it. The character can also leap on his own, zipping to-and-fro with flying kicks, and wield a variety of other weapons like swords, guns, and spears. There’s a particularly satisfying moment where he nabs a guy’s chain-like weapon and then hurls him off screen.
The trailer for Olija during today’s Devolver Direct ended with a panel saying that the game was available now on both Nintendo Switch and Steam. However, as of right now it’s not available on either platform. The Steam profile lists 2020 as the release window and Olija doesn’t even pull up a profile on the Switch eShop. It’s possible that the game hasn’t been uploaded yet, but it’s also possible that the announcement Olija is launching today is also false.
Through adventurous exploration, narration and razor sharp combat, the player will discover a strange world and its inhabitants, including Olija, an enigmatic lady that Faraday finds himself bound to over time. Inspired by swashbuckling tales and cinematic adventure games, Olija is a story about facing the unknown in adversity.
While Olija wasn’t the biggest announcement of the Devolver Direct, with games including Shadow Warrior 3, Serious Sam 4, and Fall Guys also featured, it was very much an exciting reveal. Hopefully, the matter of Olija’s release is clarified soon, whether it means the game comes out or a more accurate release window is announced.
