Niantic, the company behind Pokémon Go, Ingress, and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, has partnered with Punchdrunk, the creators of the immersive theatrical experience Sleep No More, for “multiple projects that will reinvent storytelling for a 21st-century audience. ” the companies announced Tuesday…
Those projects, Niantic said, “will further expand the interactive entertainment horizon,” combining Niantic’s location-based experiences and augmented reality with Punchdrunk’s immersive and “multi-sensory” theatrical work.
Punchdrunk’s Sleep No More is a movie that reinvents Shakespeare’s Macbeth movie that is told over several floors of a fictional New York hotel known as The McKittrick. Viewers are free to explore the hotel’s numerous rooms and floors, absorbing the narration of the play across the stage, as the actors move through the space, dance, wrestle, and vignette. Each visit to Sleep No More can be unique, as viewers experience new perspectives or are drawn to intimate, individual moments.
“It is enormously exciting to join forces with the world’s leading AR company,” said Felix Barrett, artistic director of Punchdrunk. “At Punchdrunk we create richly cinematic 3D worlds where the public can explore, touch and smell the environment; where the boundaries between reality and fantasy are indistinguishable. Those who have seen Sleep No More often compare the experience to how it would feel to enter a video game. What if you bring that feeling of adventure into the real world? Tear down the walls and the world will become your stage.
“I think Punchdrunk and Niantic can create something that has never been done before. They do it in AR, we do it in real life. The two collide and I think we are going to blow people’s minds; break gender rules and redefine the rules of mobile games. “
Niantic says it has more than 10 new games in development. That includes a new version of the popular board game Catan built on the Niantic Real World Platform called Catan: World Explorers. The new game will enter a beta test “very soon” and “will transform neighborhoods, towns and cities around the world into a giant game of Catan”.
Other titles in development at Niantic include prototypes for augmented reality handheld devices and titles with “a unique and innovative gameplay focused on outdoor exploration, movement and social interaction.”
