League of Legends is about to get much more … sponsored? Riot has announced plans to sell Summoner’s Rift Arena Banners that will allow individual leagues to showcase specific brands for eSports viewers at home..
In other words, you’ll soon see ads on the field during professional games, just as you would in traditional sports. “Starting with the summer division,” Riot explains in the announcement, “Fans who watch the official League of Legends sports broadcasts will begin to see more eSports brands right in the Rift. In the future, you can expect to see leagues begin to experiment with unique approaches that will further integrate our partners to engage local and regional fan bases. ”
The Summer Split starts on June 13, so expect to see the brand start to appear around that date. Professionals will continue to see the standard Summoner’s Rift map, with no additional sponsored banners, so there shouldn’t be any issues with banners interfering with normal play. The new Arena Banners will only be visible to viewers.
