About The Game
Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders, It’s a bare-bones port with 4K support and locked at 30fps, but the game itself is fantastic and it’s great to see all the additional details from the higher resolution.
The controls and interface have a little bit of a learning curve, and feel slightly awkward at first, but once you are acclimated, the brilliance of the game really shines through. The transition between strategic commands and hack and slash is absolutely seamless, and it was a major accomplishment to design an interface that allowed a game of this complexity to be played on a gamepad.
The hack and slash action is still fun. Plenty of games since have had deeper movesets, but there is a certain visceral weight to both the moves and enemies that a lot of more modern games have not duplicated. It just feels
solid. Like Rupert’s delts. Tactically, the game rewards you for good decisions in an impactful way. For example, archers can’t shoot as well if they are facing the sun or trees, and if you flank an enemy, you get extra SP (which allows you to do more super moves and kill the enemy even faster). This is the rare game that fuses two genres and actually does both of them well. The story and characters are also very entertaining. Voice acting is generally bad, but often in a way that it’s actually so bad that it’s good.
