Grounded Surpassed 1 Million

Grounded Surpassed 1 Million Players Within Just 48 Hours, More than a million players have checked out Grounded in its first 48 hours. Obsidian announced the news today on Twitter along with a special message of thanks from Grounded’s game director.

“Grounded has reached 1 MILLION players in the first 48 hours! Thank you everyone for playing and enjoying #thebackyard!” the company tweeted. “It’s amazing, it’s blown us away, the team is so happy, and we’re just overjoyed with all the support that we’re getting,” said Grounded game director Adam Brennecke in a video shot on his mobile phone in what appears to be his own backyard.

Via Obsidian’s official Twitter, it was announced that the game surpassed 1 million players in just the first two days of the game’s early access launch and includes a thank you message from the game’s Director. It’s not too surprising, since the game topped the Steam charts at release despite being available on Xbox Game Pass for both Xbox One and Windows Store at the same time. It certainly bodes very well for the game’s future.

Is Microsoft launching all first-party titles on Game Pass a good decision? In some cases, perhaps not, but I don’t think there’s any question whether it benefits games like Grounded. A small game like this would never have attracted such a large audience so quickly with a traditional release. As mentioned, Grounded is currently in early access, with players having to pony up $30 to try the game early. Obsidian has promised a series of monthly updates while Grounded is in early access, and the first one of these will drop on August 27. Haven’t been keeping up with Grounded?

Here are the game’s key features:

The world is a vast, beautiful and dangerous place – especially when you have been shrunk to the size of an ant. Explore, build and survive together in this first person, multiplayer, survival-adventure. Can you thrive alongside the hordes of giant insects, fighting to survive the perils of the backyard?

Reactive World – Explore this immersive and persistent world, where the insect life reacts to your actions.
Base Building – Shelter and tools are critical to your survival. Build epic bases to protect you and your stuff from the insects and the elements. Craft weapons, tools, and armor, allowing you to better fight, explore and survive.
Online Co-op – You can face the backyard alone or together, online, with up to three friends.
Campaign – Uncover the secrets lurking in the shadows of Grounded as you freely explore the backyard and progress through its mysterious story.
In other news, Obsidian recently detailed Grounded’s “Arachnophobia Mode,” which replaces the game’s spiders with unintimidating legless blobs. Seems a bit arbitrary to single out this one type of creepy crawly in a game where interacting with giant insects is kind of the entire point, but c’est la vie. I’m sure true arachnophobes will appreciate it.

Grounded is available now in early access via both Xbox Game Preview and Steam Early Access. The full version of the game is set to launch for Xbox One and PC sometime in 2021.
