Cuphead is coming
Update: Cuphead has officially been confirmed for release on PlayStation 4, and is available now via the PlayStation Store A PlayStation store page leak could mean Cuphead will show up on the console very soon. This indie title stuck out for having an incredibly faithful visual style to cartoons seen around the 1930s. Studio MDHR began work on the game in 2010, but it wouldn’t be released until 2017. Cuphead high level of difficulty contributed to its massive success, leading to a Netflix animated show called The Cuphead Show!
Spotted by Wario64, a listing on international PSN stores shows an icon for Cuphead under new games. Attempting to click the title doesn’t load anything yet, implying that it wasn’t meant to be put on the store just yet. While not confirmed by any source, it is likely that the title could be put onto the PlayStation store very soon.
“Cuphead is a classic run and gun action game heavily focused on boss battles,” reads an official pitch of the game. “Inspired by cartoons of the 1930s, the visuals and audio are painstakingly created with the same techniques of the era, i.e. traditional hand-drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings. Play as Cuphead or Mugman as you traverse strange worlds, acquire new weapons, learn powerful super moves, and discover hidden secrets while you try to pay your debt back to the devil!”
Cuphead is known for its intense run-and-gun action, challenging levels, and 1930s-style animation, although the latter attracted criticism for borrowing Fleischer visuals without addressing the racist history of the style. In any case, the hand-animated drawings are now coming full circle, as Cuphead is also getting an animated Netflix series.
PlayStation store leaks have been fairly reliable in terms of their accuracy in recent months. The fact that an official icon for the game has appeared on the store in multiple regions makes this less of a question of if it is real, as opposed to when it is happening. Cuphead is such a beloved game on Xbox One and Switch that it would only make sense from a business perspective to put it on PS4 as well if nothing was stopping Studio MDHR.
If the rumors about it being announced during the stream were true, and they do seem at least probable, it would be a massive announcement to show the game not only coming to PS4, but possibly with the Delicious Last Course expansion included. Odds are we won’t have to wait long to find out what the deal is with Cuphead showing up on the PSN.
